Access the kinds of thinking and idea-wrangling that AI can’t touch by engaging with your people (of all ages) at their most human. This full-day experiential pre-conference workshop is designed for curious educators and school leaders ready to explore hands-on, minds-on approaches to communication, collaboration, learning, and problem-solving.
In this session, you’ll gain the experience and insight to go back to your school as an Explorer of the LEGO® Serious Play® Method. Equipped with just enough background to take a confident leap into the deep end, you’ll be ready to try out the method yourself back at your school. Guided by some big, wide-open questions and deep, active reflection in real-time, you’ll build, share stories, and practice techniques that ignite deep thinking, unlock hidden insights, and foster authentic dialogue across your teams.
Workshop Overview
What is LEGO® Serious Play?
LEGO® Serious Play® is a structured, world-renowned facilitation method that uses the principles of play-based , constructivist & constructionist learning (and a big pile of LEGO bricks) to help people think, communicate, and solve challenges at their best. Participants build physical models that act as metaphors for ideas, then share stories about their models to unlock deeper understanding and insight. The bricks are the shared language that brings out voices and perspectives that might otherwise stay hidden in traditional discussions.
Why this matters for international educators
In classrooms and leadership teams alike, complex questions rarely have simple answers. LSP provides a way to explore those questions together by lighting up latent creativity, equalising participation, and making thinking visible. It’s a natural fit for teaching teams, coaching relationships, leadership groups, and learner communities who want to support authentic communication, collaboration and innovation.
What You’ll Experience & Learn
- The Foundations
You’ll begin with core concepts—why play works for serious things, how building with hands unlocks thinking, and how big questions become provocations for deep reflection and insight.
- Active Building & Storytelling
Through a series of guided challenges, you’ll experience each component technique of the LSP Method, and how they can draw out stories that make thinking clearly visible.
- Practical Tools & Techniques
Explore simple facilitation structures and metaphors that work in classrooms and meetings. We’ll look at how to craft effective questions, manage materials, and guide diverse groups in a playful yet purposeful way.
- Reflection for Your Context
We’ll pause throughout the day to help you translate experience into action so you leave with a set of clear next steps to experiment with LSP back at your school, both in classrooms and collegiate spaces.
- Confidence to Explore Back Home
As an experienced facilitator and trainer of the LSP Method, this is the workshop I wish I’d had when I took my first steps. Unlike a full certification course, this session gives you the confidence to experiment, to try LSP with your teams and students, and to begin learning by doing as an Explorer of the method. You’ll also be guided to the Open Source documentation to support you in those experiments.
How You Can Use LEGO Serious Play in International Schools
With Educators, Leaders, and Community
- Team & Culture Building
Create shared understanding, trust, and psychological safety in diverse teams by giving everyone a voice, regardless of their role, first language, or cultural background. - Strategy, Vision & School Identity
Make the abstract visible: clarify purpose, align around direction, and explore how your school’s identity evolves over time, not just what’s written in the strategic plan. - Change, Complexity & Systems Thinking
Explore how policies, people, structures, and beliefs interact inside your school, helping teams navigate change without oversimplifying what’s really going on. - Community Insight & Engagement
Move beyond surveys and conventional cultural barriers to have deeper conversations with staff, students, and families to uncover what truly matters. - Recruitment, Leadership & Learning Conversations
Go deeper than canned Q&A to surface someone’s values, mindsets, and ways of thinking in interviews, leadership development, and professional learning.
With Students
- Engagement, Voice & Visible Thinking
Bring learning to life by inviting students to build, share stories, and make their thinking tangible when words alone aren’t enough. - Big Ideas, Meaning & “How We Know”
Help students wrestle with complex concepts, perspectives, and ways of knowing in interdisciplinary spaces, without needing a single right answer. - Project-Based Learning & Productive Uncertainty
Support inquiry and PBL by giving students a way to explore ideas, relationships, and challenges as they figure things out in real time. - Critical Thinking, Creativity & Problem-Solving
Encourage flexible thinking, imagination, and sense-making by using models as metaphors for ideas, systems, and possibilities.
Collaboration, Communication & Shared Understanding
Create a common visual language to support discussion, decision-making, and teamwork across cultures, abilities, and motivations.
