Dr. Jane Lockwood is currently Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of English at Hong Kong
Polytechnic University and has worked in education in the UK, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei,
Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. She has published widely in the areas of literacy development and
assessment and business communication. She currently works as a consultant to the Education
Development Bureau in Hong Kong where she works with secondary school teachers to develop their
MOI English teaching skills across a range of subjects.

Why a Genre-Based Approach to the K-12 years of School Writing in English Works

This workshop explores how genre-based pedagogy and functional linguistics (Rose & Martin, 2012; Gebhard, 2018) combine effectively in enhancing primary and secondary school literacy development. First there will be an overview of the linguistic and pedagogical principles of the genre-based approach, and then practical examples of how literacy performance of K-12 students can be enhanced using this approach.
