I have been in education since qualifying as a teacher in 1996. I have worked in a variety of different educational contexts both as a teacher of English, Humanities and Theory of Knowledge and as an Administrator (Head of department / IB DP Coordinator and High School Assistant Principal). I have worked in the UK in state schools and Further Education, in the US at a private High School and am presently the HS AP in an international school in Muscat Oman, with my wife and two young children. I have a Bachelor’s in English Literature, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, a Master Degree in Writing and am a qualified Headteacher and IB School Evaluator. My interests outside of education, teaching and learning and school culture, lay in sailing and music, sport and art.

How to Listen: Developing Student Voice, Choice, and Agency to Improve School Culture

In this presentation, I will outline the measures taken by ABA Oman International School to revisit our student council structure and operations, in order to increase student ownership, agency and voice and the positive effects this has, almost instantly, had on our post-pandemic climate. I will share how students have been coached in essential life-long skills of conversation, collaboration, creative thinking and project management in order to address their chosen issues.
