Using Online Learning Tools to Increase English Motivation for Computer & Information Science Students

This session will explore easily accessible online tools, including Quizlet, XReading, and Academic Express. Some of these resources are available free of charge and others incur a small cost. These tools can be used by any teacher to engage students but this session will focus on their use to engage second Language english learners.

In this presentation, my aim is to discuss the unique learning environment for Japanese University students within the Department of Computer & Information Science. English holds a compulsory role in the primary and secondary education curriculum across Japan. By the time students enter university, many have preconceived notions about their proficiency in English and their motivation (or lack thereof) to pursue further English studies.
