Teachers as Content Creators : The 21st Century Shift from Learning Delivery to Learning Design

November 2021

Following trends which emerged with the birth of digital education and have only accelerated due to recent world events, the need for teachers to assume the mantle of designers of learning experiences and creators of interactive learning content has become apparent.

This new generation of teachers will be characterised by their familiarity with and mastery of digital content creation tools to create engaging and informative learning experiences for students, and for their ability to weave these digital artifacts into a conceptually rich learning journey developed according to cutting edge research and pedagogy in the areas of behavioral psychology, differentiation and accessibility, interaction design, and knowledge transmission theory.

Whereas the traditional teacher was primarily tasked with the delivery of someone else’s content, today’s teachers are undeniably the creators of their own learning experiences.
This only makes sense as teachers themselves are best positioned to anticipate and respond to the unique needs of their students, and because the modern, technology enhanced learning journey is far from static.

In this presentation we will explore the evolution and transformation of teachers from content transmission specialists to designers of learning experiences and digital content, as well as share ideas, resources, and recommendations related to the 21st century skills required for the modern teacher to thrive in this environment and how to build such capability at the individual teacher and whole school level.
