Students Perceptions of Scientists in New Media

Innovation in Education Literacy & New Media
March 2024 - 21CLHK

This presentation explores the portrayal of scientists in new media and the stereotypes that these portrayals may reinforce. It is intended for educators and administrators in international schools, with an emphasis on the potential impact of implicit stereotypes on students’ perceptions of scientists and their decisions to pursue STEM careers. By understanding the constructs and implications of the Stereotype Content Model, we can evaluate, create, and select appropriate images that present a more realistic and diverse view of scientists. The presentation underscores the importance of being mindful of the media we use in teaching and its potential impact on students’ perceptions of science and scientists, and offers both theoretical and practical implications to consider.
