Designing Badges for Self-Directed Learning
Badges offer a structured yet flexible way to foster student ownership, engagement, and growth. In this hands-on session, participants will explore the purpose and benefits of badging, with real-world examples from a working Makerspace classroom. While badges are highly effective in Makerspaces, they can also be adapted for a variety of learning areas, including STEM, literacy, the arts, and social studies.
Through interactive activities, participants will:
- Examine key design considerations for effective badges
- Brainstorm and develop a badge tailored to their classroom needs
- Explore strategies for implementation and assessment
- Learn how to structure a Badge Journal to track student progress
This session will also highlight the badge program at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, providing insight into practical applications and best practices. Participants will learn how to design badges that incorporate clear goals, differentiated recognition, feedback, reflection, and documentation of achievement.
Additionally, educators will discover how to organize badges into a digital workbook using tools best suited to their school’s needs. By implementing a badge system, teachers can shift into a facilitator role, creating a more student-driven and engaging learning experience.
