It’s all about noticing. What we notice in classrooms is shaped by what we know and value. What we notice drives our leadership decisions that follow. Classrooms are incredibly complex places that can draw our eyes in many directions, and our work as instructional leaders will hinge on what we see. We’re positioned to influence teacher practice by focusing their attention on what matters most. In this session, we will discuss how shifting our focus from what teachers are doing to how students are thinking can greatly deepen our understanding of the teaching happening in that classroom. We can train ourselves as leaders to see the types of thinking that students are doing, which will allow us to support teachers in creating richer learning experiences. This session will use mathematics as the discipline under consideration, but the skills and mindset are transferable to observations in other disciplines.
