Relationships not Rewards: The Use of Intrinsic Motivation in a Primary Learning Environment

January 2021

Over the past few years I have been re-considering and reflecting on my own use of reward systems. In this session I will share what educational psychologists (e.g. Kohn, Dweck, Pink etc.) have revealed about the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. I will consider how these findings translate into an inclusive primary learning environment. I will also share my own experiences of teaching in a ‘reward free’ learning environment and how this has enabled me to prioritise student agency, well-being and positive relationships.
