The current dialogue surrounding literacy instruction includes major pedagogical shifts. Teachers worldwide are moving away from a balanced literacy approach and incorporating our understanding of the science of reading. Some of these changes include considerations for oral language proficiency, intentional knowledge building, and incorporating systematic phonics instruction in the early primary years. Similarly, upper primary teachers are moving away from leveled reading systems and seeking more effective ways to build literacy skills while teaching comprehension, building vocabulary, and supporting students as they engage with a variety of texts.
In this presentation, Lena will share her experiences incorporating current pedagogical approaches that support all students (especially English language learners!) and guiding her department of teachers in a Chinese bilingual school to do the same. Come to hear a case study, ask questions, and share your experiences in changing how we teach children to read and think.
