Having led international schools across the world for a decade, and now in demand as a consultant and trainer helping schools worldwise to know and understand each and every individual student in their care, Matthew believes that, despite our best efforts and intentions, there are ‘lost’ children in classrooms, corridors and playgrounds everywhere.
In this keynote presentation, he will explore the concept of “masking”, as it applies to various student characteristics, identities and experiences. He will make the point that our students wear these masks thickly and well, and that we must find creative ways to look and see beneath, if we are to enjoy genuine connection.
He will challenge delegates to reflect on the extent to which their schools are safe spaces within which for students to be their authentic selves, and what barriers might exist as an impediment to this. Through a design lens, he will help delegates remove these barriers in their schools, with creativity, care and intent.
Finally, he will argue that we have an obligation to ensure every single child can “be seen, be heard and be known” – holistically, unconditionally and without exception – if they are to belong and to thrive.
