In this engaging and informative workshop, participants will explore research-based strategies for creating assessments that honor the rich linguistic diversity of our multilingual learners. As Dr. Ofelia García, a leading scholar in bilingual education, states, “Assessment for bilingual students must be flexible and take into account their fluid language practices.”
Together, we will:
- Examine the unique challenges and opportunities in assessing multilingual students
- Discuss the importance of translanguaging and how it can be leveraged in assessment design
- Explore how we can collaboratively develop assessment tasks that allow students to demonstrate their knowledge using their full linguistic repertoire
- Learn how to scaffold assessments to support emerging bilinguals at various proficiency levels
Through interactive activities, case studies, and group discussions, participants will gain practical tools and insights to create more equitable assessments in their own classrooms. We will draw upon the work of experts such as Pauline Gibbons, who emphasizes the importance of “high challenge, high support” in assessment for language learners.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is designed for K -12 educators across all content areas who are committed to nurturing the success of every multilingual learner and to ensure that our assessments celebrate and validate the linguistic identities of all our students.
