Choosing Programming Environment: Access and Equity

Education Technology Literacy & New Media
March 2024 - 21CLHK

Technology has become an integral part in the way we live, study and work. Hence, future-ready education should move learners from just technology consumers to creators and inventors. Implicitly, computer programming is increasingly perceived as a core literacy in K–12.
However, educators are confronted with a fundamental hurdle of matching  learners’ cognitive abilities and learning objectives with computer programming platforms (i.e. the tools, environment, gadget e.t.c). To address the problem, we conducted a systematic review of 111 articles evaluating the affordances of computer programming platforms.

The session will cover
(a) Issues of equity and access to computer science education
(b) Evidence-based dimensions to consider when choosing programming platforms.
