In this session, we will present the experiences and challenges of teachers and students in applying Makerspace and Design Thinking to English language learning at the junior secondary level in two local secondary schools in Hong Kong. The teachers we worked with perceived the need to better engage students in a more authentic English language learning experience with meaningful tasks that connected to their lives and demanded creative thinking and expression in English. Our objective was to enrich students’ language learning and contribute to whole-person development through the cultivation of a maker mindset focused on solving problems and innovation. The experience of two schools will be shared, one in which students created marketing materials and an app for their own start-up company, and another in which students designed and prototyped a board game to help their peers learn English.
