The presentation begins with a reflection on my 3 year journey in leading a English Language Makerspace project in a local HK secondary school. The project challenges traditional teaching and learning methods by embracing a pedagogy not often seen as suitable for language subjects. The project has grown from an experiment in a single classroom to a systemic shift across the junior secondary level.
I would then like to share some strategies for leading transformation or systemic change in local schools. Many teachers in Hong Kong have expressed an interest in what we have been doing in this project- but they are unwilling to try Maker Education in their own schools for fear of a lack of support. I’d like to offer support and strategies for balancing the demands of the local curriculum with innovative and transformative practice, encouraging teachers to embrace the chance to be a leader of change.
