In the Weeds: Deselection is Key to Library Collection Development

Do you love to weed? Hate to weed? Are your library shelves full? Do you recognize your collection needs weeding but don’t know where to start or how to prioritize? Are you worried your shelves will be bare? Are you happy to weed but don’t know what to do with the weeded books?

Megan has worked in libraries that were on the path to updating the collection, libraries where lots of work had been done, where 99% of the books had been donated and several where the previous librarian struggled to remove books from the collection. She will share strategies and tips to help answer these questions and more.

Megan Graff, Canadian Academy

Megan started out teaching elementary French immersion in Canada. Her first overseas position was as a French and PE teacher in Singapore. She then transitioned into a teacher-librarian role and hasn’t looked back. She has worked at multiple international schools in Europe and Asia. She interspersed these positions with two long-term volunteer stints. The first was as a teacher-librarian mentor in Tanzania and the second was as a communications director/volunteer coordinator for a small NGO that set up school and village libraries in Bolivia.
