I have sat with a lot of leadership teams, a stack of wellbeing data on the table, and heard the same question: “So… what do we actually do with this?”
Most schools now have more wellbeing data than they have ever had. What they don’t have is a way of turning it into decisions. That is what this session is about.
We will work through six steps – listen, locate, prioritise, design, act, learn – the same process now used by leading schools across Australia and in Hong Kong, the UAE and Kazakhstan through The Wellbeing Compass. We will run it on real, de-identified schools we have worked with this year. One had a wonderful wellbeing culture in its junior years that quietly fell away once students hit adolescence. The whole-school average hid it completely. Another started with 21 good ideas and had the courage to begin with seven. A third ran the survey for a second time and asked the honest question: what actually moved, and what didn’t?
Along the way I will share what we are learning from our research partnership with Adelaide University, Resilient Youth Australia and the Australian Institute for Machine Learning. Together we are building ethical AI that helps leaders see what is really in their data, without ever making the decision for them.
There is a discipline to all of this, and we will be upfront about it. Follow cohorts, not averages. Say what you are comparing against. Always show the sample size. And in the first year, do less than you think you should.
You will leave with the six steps on a single page, a worked example, and a handful of questions to ask of your next dataset before you spend a dollar on a response.
