Personalise Your Next Unit With AI: Keep the Thinking, Grow the Agency

AI has changed what’s possible for highly effective teachers. Content can be carefully differentiated for every learner. A rich project, interactive simulations and practice tools can be built using AI tools in minutes. Every student can have an AI tutor that knows them and the unit they are learning.

AI tools have changed a teacher’s focus. When students no longer rely on the teacher for every piece of information, the teacher can step back and run a student-centred classroom, where learners set direction, choose pathways and take ownership of their progress.

That shift only works if students are still doing the thinking. And not all AI tools are created equal or safe.

In this full-day workshop, student agency specialist Kyle Wagner and AI in education specialist Chris Bush bring their two fields together teaching you how to effectively and safely integrate AI into your teaching and learning. You will work on a unit you already teach and leave with it redesigned: planned as a project, differentiated, supported by AI tools students can use safely, and set up for students to direct more of their own learning.

We work through a primary and a secondary unit alongside you all day, so each step makes sense whatever year level you teach.
Come with a unit of study you are ready to transform.

Learning Intentions. We Are Learning To:

  • Set appropriate AI use for students and teachers, so AI supports thinking rather than replacing it
  • Plan project-based learning that builds student agency, doing our own design thinking first and then using AI as a thought partner
  • Bring students in as thought partners, so they help shape the success criteria for their own learning
  • Differentiate content within the project using current AI tools, including multimodal resources and interactive learning tools built without code
  • Build AI tools for students, including a safe tutor that supports self-directed learning

Success Criteria

By the end of the workshop, you will have:

✅ An AI use map for your unit, showing where AI is off, supporting or central for each task

✅ A project plan for your unit, with a driving question, a real-world task and success criteria

✅ Differentiated resources and at least one interactive learning tool for your project

✅ A student tutor or project assistant, tested by a colleague

✅ A plan for launching the project with your students, including how they will help shape the success criteria, plus one change to make in your first week back

Kyle Wagner

Student Centred Learning Designer, Middle School Director, Project Based Learning expert/coach,12 SHIFTS Creator.

Kyle Wagner believes every student deserves the chance to learn through meaningful, real-world projects. In his past experience as a Humanities Teacher at High Tech High, he watched 12-year-olds build hovercrafts, write field guides for local universities and track marine life with sensors they built themselves, and learned that great teaching often means stepping back so students can chart their own path. Since then, Kyle has gone on to co-found project-based schools, keynote conferences, write books and build practical frameworks and trainings. Through Transform School, he has helped thousands of educators worldwide design deep, community-centred learning that grows socially, emotionally and globally aware citizens.
